The typical Tanganyika tank:
- Temperature: 27.5 degree celsius.
This is the usual temperature of the lake at its surface. Many cichlids who
live in little deeper regions, e.g. Cyprichromis sp., prefer colder water -
around 24 degrees celsius.
- pH at least 8.0 better 8.5
- hard water
- no plants required, use of only hard plants recommended (Vallisneria etc)
- Many stones for caves, borders between the territories
- The pairs usually take one cave as middle of their territory - so place
the caves so that they won't fight much
- Areas with sand for those cichlids like Ophtalmotilapia, Cyathopharynx and
Enantiopus
- Areas with sand and shells for the shell dwellers
Lake Tanganyika is 680 km (420 mi) long and about 72 km (about 45 mi) wide at
the widest point and covers about 32,900 sq km (about 12,700 sq mi). The
greatest depth is 1,436 m (4,710 ft), making it the second deepest freshwater
lake in the world. The only outlet is the Lukuga River, which flows into the
Congo River.
